Formulations polyurethane extends the life of roofs and decks

Proper maintenance of a building or warehouse is essential for it to remain in good condition for many years. The facades and interiors are usually repaired from time to time as they are the most visible parts, while roofs and ceilings are usually forgotten until problems with leaks and filtrations arise.
Our high density polyurethane foam can play an important role in extending the life of buildings.
The Formulations construction system: foams + aliphatic membrane
The construction system we propose is designed for direct application of the foam from polyurethane on top of the roof or deck itself and then the membrane or cladding on top of the roof or deck. foam or insulation. This provides hydro-thermal insulation of the building.
With the foam from polyurethane it is possible to wrap all the elements of the roof or covering under a continuous product, giving it extra resistance, as well as improving energy efficiency (less overheating in summer and less heat escaping in winter). The aliphatic membrane, on the other hand, in addition to protecting the foam from UV rays, improves the waterproofing.
The products that Formulaciones recommends
The foams we recommend for this construction system are POLIFORMA 4220, POLIFORMA 5220 and POLIFORMA P210. The first two are gas based with a density free of 40 and 50 kg/m3 respectively, whereas POLIFORMA P210 has a density approximately 300 kg/m3 and provides the highest compressive strength.
The most recommended membrane is HIDROFORMA H2V0, although HIDROFORMA A1N0 or HIDROFORMA A1N1 can also be used. The membranes are available in a wide range of colours to suit the end customer's taste.
POLYPHORMA P210
It is a high performance resin density which is used in construction mainly in asbestos encapsulation but also in roof insulation and piggery conditioning. Asbestos is a very dangerous substance because when it degrades it releases microscopic particles into the environment. When inhaled by humans, these particles are deposited in the lungs and tissue tissue, causing micro-injuries and, if exposure is continuous, lung and pleural cancer.
In Spain, asbestos is most prevalent in asbestos cement roofs. With POLIFORMA P210 it is possible to extend the life of these roofs in good condition and in an economical way. Although the POLIFORMA P210 has a very good waterproofingFor outdoor works, it is recommended that HIDROFORMA H2V0, available in various colours, is applied to improve waterproofing while protecting it from UV rays.

POLIFORMA 4220 and POLIFORMA 5220
The POLIFORMA 4220 is made of density free 40 kg/m3while 5220 50 kg/m3. Both are CCC4 foams, using fluorinated gases as an expanding gas. These foams have a higher compressive strength than those of density 30 kg/m3They can therefore be placed on terraces and roof terraces.
The choice of material is essential for optimal results.
When choosing which products to use in the restoration, repair or maintenance of a roof, it is very important to establish the end use of the roof, the construction material on which it will be applied and the energy needs of the building.
The energy requirements will determine the thickness of the foam and the number of layers needed, while the use will establish the compressive strength of the foam. In terms of material, there is the special case of asbestos-containing fibre cement. In the presence of asbestos, a roof in poor condition can only be handled by a RERA, but if the condition of the roof is good and does not require any repairs, asbestos encapsulation can be chosen as indicated in an article published in this blog which you can access by clicking here. In the case of a restoration, it is possible that the shape of the tile may need to be preserved, so the most appropriate option is to opt for the foam high density.. In the event that the specifications of the restoration do not allow for the foamThe application of the aliphatic membrane will improve roof waterproofing, while thermal insulation can be applied under-roof.
Good application means high durability
The initial condition of the deck or roof is important as any loose elements must be repaired prior to application of the foam. It must also be completely dry, as the presence of water or humidity can affect the growth and stability of the foamand, of course, to eliminate the presence of dust, grease or mould that could affect the good quality of the product. adhesion of the foam to the substrate.
Environmental conditions also play a very important role in the application of the foam. Too much cold can cause the foam does not grow at the proper rate and "squirts" before solidifying. A high temperature may cause the core temperature to be much higher and the foam destabilise. A strong wind will cause the performance of the foam is worse due to losses caused by dragging.
It is very important to read our Technical Data Sheets which specify the maximum recommended thickness of coats and the number of coats to be applied before the application of the foam. It is equally important that the machine is correctly balanced and in good condition to ensure the correct mixing of the products.
To avoid condensation, special attention must be paid to singular points such as anchorages, expansion joints, dividing walls, etc. and act accordingly to prevent the formation of condensation (e.g. by installing vapour barriers).
Once the foam is sufficiently cured to allow for operator traffic, the membrane application can proceed. To ensure good adhesion of the membrane to the polyurethaneIt is recommended to sweep to remove any dust and dirt that may have accumulated. Depending on the membrane, it can be easily applied by brush, roller or airless spray gun. It is also advisable to carefully read the Technical Data Sheet of the product to know the recommended thickness and recoating times.

Proper maintenance will prevent future problems
Once the membrane has been applied, continued maintenance of the membrane can ensure that it lasts for many years and that no further investment is required. It is important to clean the roof following the advice given in the Membrane Data Sheet to improve the performance of the membrane. durability of this.
Should any damage occur over the years, the membranes can be easily repaired by renovating the affected area and repainting.
In our R+D+i laboratory we also have a research line dedicated to all those customers who require special products in order to be able to design them according to the customer's needs.
